SACRAMENTO, CA – U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina today issued the following statement in response to the news this morning that the national unemployment rate rose to 9.9 percent in April:
“I am pleased that our economy added more jobs than expected last month, but the fact that our nation’s unemployment rate is on the rise is still cause for concern. It’s clear that the stimulus championed by Barbara Boxer and her Democratic allies in Washington has not fulfilled its purported goal of tamping down the unemployment rate. Just as troubling is the nation’s underemployment rate, which has grown to 17.1 percent, near last October’s record high. And we should take cold comfort that nearly a quarter of the job growth last month was in the federal government. While employment in the economy is 1.4 million jobs below where it was last year, the federal government has added more than 100,000 jobs.
“In order to create jobs and get our economy back on track, we must focus on ensuring that our nation’s job creators, small businesses and entrepreneurs, have the freedom to grow, flourish and succeed. That means cutting taxes, reducing regulations and getting credit flowing again. It remains obvious, however, that such common-sense policies will not be implemented until we send new leadership to Washington. Barbara Boxer has not served our state well during her 28 years in Washington, and that is why I am asking the people of California to elect me to replace her this November.”
