SACRAMENTO, CA – U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina today earned the endorsements of California State Assemblywoman Diane Harkey and former Assemblywoman Sharon Runner. Both had initially endorsed one of Fiorina’s primary opponents, Chuck DeVore.
“Sharon Runner and Diane Harkey are committed public servants who have made significant contributions to their districts and to the state of California,” Fiorina said. “We share a commitment to job creation, economic growth and public safety, and I’m grateful to have their support and endorsements.”
Assemblywoman Harkey was elected to the California State Assembly in 2008 and represents parts of Orange and San Diego Counties. A former business executive, Harkey had a successful 30-year career in corporate finance and banking prior to joining the state Legislature. She earned a 100 percent rating from the California Chamber of Commerce for her work on economic growth and job creation during her first year in office.
“Carly’s business background and her firsthand experience creating jobs and meeting budgets during difficult economic times are exactly what’s needed in Washington today. Now more than ever, we need representatives in the U.S. Senate who are willing to make the tough decisions necessary to cut government spending, grow the economy and create jobs,” Harkey said. “Carly is a true fiscal conservative whose common-sense approach to politics will bring positive change to California’s representation in Washington, and I am pleased to endorse her campaign for U.S. Senate.”
Runner served in the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2008, where she represented the Antelope Valley. During her tenure in the Legislature, Runner served as Assistant Republican Leader, Vice Chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee and Chair of the Republican Women’s Caucus. She also co-sponsored Jessica’s Law, the most comprehensive set of laws in the country dealing with sexual predators. Prior to her career in public service, Runner was a successful businesswoman and founded Desert Christian Schools.
“Carly is the conservative candidate in this race who can beat Barbara Boxer and help us bring integrity and responsibility back to Washington. Carly has proven she has what it takes to run a strong campaign, beat Boxer in November and deliver effective solutions to our state and our nation’s most pressing challenges,” said Runner. “I am proud to join her team, and I look forward to working with Carly in the coming months to strengthen and grow her support base across California.”
