SACRAMENTO, CA – Following reports that the Obama administration is backing away from plans to implement tough measures designed to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina today issued the following statement renewing her call to Barbara Boxer and the Obama administration to continue pursuing crippling sanctions against Iran:
“I am deeply troubled by the news that the Obama administration is backing away from plans to pursue crippling sanctions against the Iranian regime. I urge Barbara Boxer and the Obama administration to stand up for our country’s national security – not to mention security and stability throughout the Middle East and South Asia – by moving forward on these critically important measures.
“A nuclear-armed Iran presents a grave danger to the safety and security of people around the globe. Even if it requires acting alone, the United States must do everything in our power to force Iran to suspend its nuclear program and engage in serious negotiations. That is why I strongly support the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act and urge its swift approval by Congress. If we are serious about stopping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and about supporting Israel as our strategic ally in the region, we must act swiftly to implement tough, crippling sanctions now.”
