In Case You Missed It: Fiorina slams Boxer as a ‘failed senator’ From The San Jose Mercury News

by Ken McLaughlin January 14, 2009

U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina on Wednesday night launched a blistering attack on Sen. Barbara Boxer, portraying her as “a failed senator” who can’t even get along with her fellow Washington lawmakers.

But speaking to a friendly hometown crowd in Los Altos Hills, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard also began targeting a fellow Republican who will soon be her new political opponent: former Silicon Valley Rep. Tom Campbell.

Fiorina depicted Campbell — who plans to drop out of the California governor’s race today to join the GOP primary contest to depose Boxer — as someone who wouldn’t hesitate to raise taxes.

In response to a question from the Republican audience at the Fremont Hills Country Club, Fiorina noted that Campbell last year proposed a temporary 32-cent gas tax as a way to balance the state budget.

“If you want that, Tom’s the man,” the Los Altos Hills resident said, after spending most of her speech criticizing Washington as a place chock full of waste, inefficiency and career politicians.

“I’m a conservative because I’m an optimist,” Fiorina said.

An optimist, she said, believes that individuals know how to spend money better than Washington. So, she argued, it’s the job of lawmakers to make sure people get to spend as much of their own money as possible.

Boxer, first elected to the Senate in 1992, is someone who enjoys spending other people’s money and can’t even figure out how to get bills passed in the Senate, in part because other senators don’t like to work with her, Fiorina charged.

During her years in the Senate, Fiorina claimed, Boxer has carried only three pieces of legislation, compared with 26 bills carried by Dianne Feinstein, her fellow Democratic senator from California.

Fiorina conceded that even if she triumphs in the GOP primary, beating the entrenched Democrat will not be easy.

“This will be a very difficult race,” Fiorina said. “But we can beat her.”
